Humanitarian Aid Toilet Clusters

Aerosan is working and designing directly with organizations within the UN system, the International Federation of the Red Cross, Oxfam, and others to help meet the needs of humanitarian aid actors by supplying relevant products which will be prototyped and tested going forward. The key to our current design is the use of low-cost, durable materials, in the form of re-purposed vinyl billboard fabric, to ensure both cost effectiveness and robustness. Flexible materials have also made the construction of a large plenum (a space for air circulation and venting) possible. The larger plenum improves ventilation, decreases ordours, minimizes the occurrence of flies and other insects and speeds up desiccation. The systems are completely flat packable and are easily deployed to areas facing humanitarian crisis. 

Haiti Community Sanitation

Aerosan was formed officially in 2014 in Halifax, Canada, but our key members have been working in the field since 2011, partnered with Fontes Foundation (Norway), and before that with GiveLove (US), and others. Our work has primarily occurred in Cité Soleil, a slum in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and was a response to post-earthquake sanitation needs in areas where typical NGOs did not work due to the area being declared a UN “Red Zone.” We facilitated the construction of 25 above ground, closed containment composting toilets, and to ensure the sustainability of these systems, Aerosan facilitated a community-led sanitation total sanitation (CLTS) workshop with toilet users and local community members.

Reinvent the Toilet Fair: India

In 2014, we were invited to attend the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Fair: India. Our system was redesigned using lessons learned from our Haiti community sanitation project and by also using input received from international Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) experts. The design considerations focused on reducing the weight, cost, and improving the wall and plenum structures of the toilet.
